No private service by cops

The Editor, Sir:

I am responding to the report of the theft of $1 million taken from a contractor's car.

Deputy Superintendent Clive Blair, operations officer for the St Catherine South Division, is reported in The STAR as saying, "People must be more vigilant when dealing with large sums of money." And that: "They can ask the police for assistance in transporting the money as the criminals are on the lookout for new victims."

I disagree with the offer from Supt Blair to the public. The police are not in the private security business. People carrying large amounts of cash must provide their own security. Period.

I am, etc.,
