Contribution of immigrants

The Editor, Sir:

Letter writers Thompson and Tucker have missed the point regarding immigrants in Britain. It is not that that government fails to see the benefits of migrants in Britain. Au contraire, they do see the benefit and would welcome more migrants just because of the financial gain.

The real problem lies with the people of Britain. During this time of high unemployment, British people are very afraid. In their fear they blame migrants for most of their problems, even when migrants are not at fault.

Misplaced opinion

The current government has less than six months to convince its nation that it deserves to be returned to office. That simply means that the public's every whim and fancy must be treated as being right for Britain, no matter how misplaced public opinion is. The problem is enhanced by the growing threat of the BNP (the British National Party), which is largely considered as 'racist', gaining support among the misguided public regarding the very issue of migration.

If the current government is to be blamed for the difficulties migrants currently face, it is the failure to educate the public of the true value of migrants in society. To see that migrants are here to help, even in this time of financial difficulty, and not to make things worse.

I am, etc.,
