National debate - time wasting

Published: Wednesday | November 18, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

Prime Minister Golding's challenge, or invitation, to the Opposition for a national debate is not a productive one. The health sector is in crisis, crime and violence are way out of control, and we are yet to conclude an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. I can picture our country being further distracted and losing precious time with the politicians initially debating the time, format and issues to be debated in this national debate, followed by the media initiating and leading discussions to determine the winners and losers.

There is no need or time for a public spectacle. Gordon House is constitutionally designated for discussing and debating national issues, and also provides sufficient comedy, drama and entertainment.
