Waterford High extended their lead atop Group Two to three points, after defeating Eltham High 1-0 in second round action of the urban area ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup senior schoolboy football league competition, at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

Waterford now have six points from two games, while Bridgeport have three points from one game after getting the better of Norman Manley 2-1 in the second match of the double header. Eltham and Norman Manley have yet to secure a point, having played one and two games, respectively.

Bridgeport came from behind to win through goals from Darren Mattocks in the 14th minute and a dramatic later winner from Jay Lindsay in the 89th minute. Norman Manley had taken the lead in the 10th minute through a brilliant free kick from Dean Phillips.

Victory

Waterford secured their victory courtesy of a 30th-minute header from Oshane Greaves, after Eltham's defense had failed to clear a bouncing ball in their six-yard box.

Floyd Coke, coach of Waterford, was very pleased with his team's performance and is very confident of claiming the title.

"It was a very good performance, we are very confident," Coke said. "In fact, we have ambitions of winning the Manning Cup."

Eltham's coach, Gregory Allen, was naturally very disappointed with his team's performance.

"I am very disappointed because for the entire second half we controlled the game and should have scored," Allen said. "We have two more games, so we have to win them both."

The competition continues today with Group Three double-header at Constant Spring Sports Complex. Kingston College will tackle Tivoli Gardens High at 1 p.m., followed by Excelsior vs St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) at 3 p.m.

Excelsior and STATHS lead the group on three points, after respective 2-0 wins over KC and Tivoli Gardens in the first matches.

There are three groups of four and each winner, plus the top second-place school, will advance to the semi-finals after round robin play.
