No security breach in Caymanas shooting

DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT of Police Marlon Nesbeth yesterday said investigations into trainer Donovan Bruce's death at Caymanas Park have so far established that last Friday's shooting in the stable area did not result from a security-checkpoint breach.

"We've some information working on and it's just a matter of time to put everything together," said Nesbeth, who is in charge of the St Catherine South Police Division. "We have a team of persons dedicated to that."

Bruce, 44, was shot in the head and reportedly died at hospital.

Nesbeth said Bruce's killing did not appear to be a random act.

Climbed a wall

"I note it is being reported that the shooter walked into the property. Nothing of the sort happened where security persons were. He climbed a wall and exited at the same point.

"It was a short distance to where Bruce's stable is. He perpetrated the act and exited by the same route.

"It was certainly not a case of security being lax, as if the shooter was allowed on to the compound."

Nesbeth, whose division led a recent raid at Caymanas Park, said he was aware of acute problems affecting the property's perimeter wall.

Solution needed

"I toured the property prior to the incident and even since, to look at what existed. What is happening there needs solutions. It makes securing the compound, whoever is entrusted with security, a tremendous task."

The deputy superintendent said his division is piecing together information.

"Unfortunately, we haven't made a breakthrough yet but we're sure we'll soon come up with something, narrow it down to suspects and have the matter cleared up."
