Flu-hit Jamaica feeling better for CCC battle

When Jamaica go up against the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) today, it is expected that they will have their full complement of players to chose from, following a mild flu virus outbreak amid the team.
Captain Chris Gayle and batsman Shawn Findley, who both had to miss Wednesday's humiliating 90-run defeat to defending champions Trinidad and Tobago because of the virus, are said to have recovered sufficiently after visits to the doctor and, along with leg-spinner Odean Brown, who was affected by the virus but played, are all expected to be available for selection.
Fast bowler Jerome Taylor, who also missed the match because of an aggravated hamstring injury, should also be back as Jamaica faces a virtual must-win situation to book a spot in the semi-finals.
The CCC defeated the Windward Islands in their opener and will advance to the semis with a win.
Great alarm
"I wouldn't say it (the flu outbreak) is of great alarm. The last person I took to the doctor today (yesterday) was Odean Brown. Gayle is up and fine and in general, everything is now under control," team manager Maurice Clarke told The Gleaner in a telephone interview yesterday.
"People started to feel a bit down about two or three days after we got in. Some people had symptoms, which were treated with Panadol and the like, but some people's systems were weaker than some," he added.
Clarke also explained that with Gayle down and several players a bit drained, it had a direct impact on the Trinidad match.
"It definitely had an impact on the team's performance yesterday (Wednesday) as we lost our main batsman in Gayle. David Bernard Sr, the trainer, and the coach Junior Bennett were also hit and I had to do some check ups today.
"But we had a training session today (yesterday) and with the exception of Gayle, who was given added time to rest, everybody trained," Clarke said.
Other players who suffered effects of the flu but have since recuperated enough to train are batsman Danza Hyatt, wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr and pacer Daren Powell.
