Forget CCJ, stay local

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OUR GOVERNMENT and Opposition are debating whether the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) should be our final court of appeal. As a young university student in Barbados, I urge them to eliminate such a discourse. Let us establish our own final court of appeal in Jamaica. We do not need to be a part of the CCJ - we can do it on our own with the help of God.

Studying here in Barbados, I have heard the most harsh, negative and backward statements about my dear land, Jamaica. The eastern Caribbean is against us, from Antigua, St Vincent and Barbados to Trinidad. The reality is we cannot befriend our secret enemies. These islanders are so prejudiced against us, it is unbelievable.

Cement ties with cuba

I would prefer Jamaica to build a stronger relationship with Cuba than with the eastern Caribbean. Cuba has constantly opened her arms to us. It is not wise for us to have CCJ as a final court of appeal, when the others dislike us so much.

It must be noted that before coming here, I was all for Caribbean integration, but since coming here, it has dawned on me that Caribbean integration is a theory that will never be a reality. Integration will never work until the others who hate us remove their prejudices against us.

I have hope that one day we will overcome our socio-economic and political struggles. We will overcome.

I am, etc.,
