Fathers need to step up

The Editor, Sir

I am so disturbed and angry with Jamaican fathers who refuse to support their children. It pains my heart to know that from the men on the street to the executives in the office, they refuse to provide their children with the basic necessities, such as food, clothing, shelter; and, most important, education, the vital key to success.

It is the cry of many mothers across the island: 'it's just me alone; the father gone as soon as he realized that I am pregnant.' I would like to know what happens to fathers in Jamaica, and why those in authority don't seek to do something about the situation. What can Hear the Children Cry or the Children's Advocate do for these children who can't go to school, yet their fathers are earning decent salaries.

What is wrong with Jamaican men? On a daily basis the courtrooms are filled with the same complaints for child support. It's full time the Government or those in authority step in and implement stiffer penalty for fathers who do not support their children. Enough is enough!

I am, etc.,
