Save Holland Bamboo before it's too late

Published: Wednesday | October 7, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

Traveling through Holland Bamboo in St Elizabeth, I have noticed over 80 makeshift vending stalls dotting the bamboo grass. While I believe in free enterprise, regulation is necessary for various reasons; first, for the preservation of the site, improved aesthetics, sanitary and environmental protection, as well as protection of the entrepreneurs' investment and assets.

I would like to call on the Government and its various organs to step in and regulate the commerce that takes place in this national treasure before it is too late, and riots and destruction occur when these entrepreneurs are asked to relocate, maybe forcefully, because we allow it to grow unregulated. I support the right of every citizen to make a living but please, not at the destruction of our heritage.

Vending stalls

I recommend the creation of three lay-bys where legal vending and commerce can take place. Give three or four designs for the construction of vending stalls and other amenities. A company such as JN Small Business could provide financing where required.

I am, etc.,
