The Montego Suite of The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston was a picture of elegance last Friday, September 25, as guests and members of the Bethel Apostolic Church met to celebrate 40 years of service in Jamaica as well as honour members of the church family.

Fresh floral bouquets dotting the room against a backdrop of gold tapestry set the tone for an evening of light fun and fellowship as some 14 people were presented with honours, dubbed 'Kingdom Builder Awards' for service to the church and community.

Church bishop Ira D. Thompson, and pastor John Hewitt, both with over 30 years in Christian service, headed the list of people who received commendations and awards.

Chartered aircraft

Bethel Apostolic Church began on South Camp Road in St Andrew on December 15, 1968, under the leadership of Bishop Sydney Alexander Dunn. It was the local arm of the Bethel churches in The United Kingdom which comprised mainly Jamaican and West Indian members.

The idea then was that those members who decided to return to Jamaica should have access to a branch of the Bethel Church where they could worship.

Such was the devotion to the fledgling ministry that a chartered aircraft carrying over 100 members from England arrived in the island for a grand opening in 1967 and the week of services that followed.

Taken back in time

Guests were taken back in time with a slide show display, old photographs, and stories of life in the early church.

Guest speaker, St Elizabeth businessman and scientist, Dr Lyndon Johnson, reminded his audience of its unique role in evangelism, and encouraged the group to remain true to its mission.

Entertainment was provided by renowned gospel musician, Dennis Rushton, and soloist Ann-marie Thomas.

Other awardees included Joseph Lewis, Joan Kerr, Roy Evans, Seymour Brown , David McFarlane, Michael Lewis, Dorothy Johnson, Gene Hylton, Joan Smalling, Noel Mullings, Valvern Wittock and Ivy Brooks.
