GUYANA - Jagdeo to look into Kwame issue

Published: Wednesday | September 30, 2009

Guyana's president, Bharrat Jagdeo, has promised to "look into the matter" regarding a taped conversation allegedly implicating his Information Liaison, Kwame McCoy, according to a report www.cananews.net.

"I have not had a full briefing as yet, so I am going to look into the matter and I gather that this matter is subjudice, or it's in court, so I have to be careful (of) what I say at this time. Jagdeo told reporters soon after his arrival yesterday from the United States.

Asked by reporters if he is likely to ask McCoy to step down temporarily, Jagdeo replied: "Once I get briefed, then I will make a determination as to the way forwards".

McCoy has sued three media houses, claiming GUY$150 million (US$726,149), for continued harassment surrounding the controversial broadcasts and publications of a telephone conversation that they claim McCoy had with a teenage boy.

He has been granted an injunction, restraining the three media houses from further broadcasting or publishing allegations surrounding the recording.
