Unfair criticisms of Bolt

Published: Sunday | September 27, 2009

The Editor, Sir;

As a Jamaican who wishes all others well, I must say the recent spate of letters questioning whether Usain Bolt deserves the Order of Jamaica national honour are totally unfair.

It is true that we are coming from an era where we thought only those who laboured for years deserve the highest honours. But many who sit at their computers writing criticisms of Bolt are not remembering that it took hours of hard work and dedication to stun the world with his speed.

'red-eye and grudgeful'

Bolt must lift up his head and hold it up high, as we know he has won the prize. Remember the line from Everton Blender's song: "Lift up your heads and hold it up high, we know that you have won the prize."

There will always be 'red-eye and grudgeful' people in this world ready to criticise, but Bolt should ignore them. Any Jamaican who works hard and persists at his craft to be number one in this world should be honoured. If any Jamaican tries and succeeds in climbing Mount Everest I will praise him and not belittle his efforts.

encourage and reward hard work

The world is an open field; our job should be to encourage and reward hard work. Jamaica can, and will, produce other giants like Usain Bolt. May God bless and help this young man to run even faster. May God also bless his parents and all who helped him along the way.

I am, etc.,
