Carib Peace Day hits airwaves

At noon today, radio stations across the Caribbean have been asked to play an original song - which is untitled and not previously released - which is intended to advocate peace in the region.

The move forms part of Caribbean Peace Day celebrations, an initiative that was prompted by escalating levels of crime and violence in the region.

The Caribbean Peace Day project consists of a yearlong series of activities aimed at increasing awareness of the upsurge in crime and peace efforts, and provide opportunities for individuals to make contributions towards solving the crime problem.

Critically, the project also aims at empowering individuals and organisations to implement peace initiatives in their home country, and to raise the finances necessary for practical steps to address issues which lead to crime.

There are seven components of the initiative. One is the Caribbean Peace Day Radio Appeal, which will coincide with the United Nations International Peace Day.

This event will signal the launch of several activities that will culminate in the launch of the Caribbean Peace Trust Fund on September 21 next year, and will be acknowledged annually.
