Give honour to whom it is due

Marley and Bennett

The Editor, Sir:

Once again it is time to confer awards on outstanding Jamaicans who exemplify distinction in their respective fields. For some, it took long years of blood and sweat while, for others, a short time. By whatever means the distinction comes, I feel that persons must be awarded for their toil and service.

Unfortunately, there are two persons I think who have been thrown on to the back-burner for a long while, who should receive the honour of Order of National Hero. These are the late Robert Nesta Marley and Louise Bennett- Coverley. I am not so au fait with the criteria that determine a person's eligibility but I think that they have made a meaningful and significant impact on national life.

global recognition

It is not enough to celebrate a day in their honour, or their birthdays. I think we know quite well that these mini celebrations are being held overtly to appease the spirits of many Jamaicans like me who want more.

Their work speaks for them. There is no talking about Jamaica without the mention of the global recognition given to Jamaican Creole because of Louise Bennett and the electrifying reggae music of Robert Nesta Marley. Haven't they rendered service of the most distinguished nature to Jamaica? I think so.

Give honour to whom it is due.

I am, etc.,
