Chan Chess Open

Veteran National Chess Master Geoffrey Byfield will try to make it four-in-a-row when the Harold Chan Chess Open gets under way at the Campion College auditorium today.

Byfield, who accomplished the improbable feat of copping his third straight Harold Chan title last year, will find competition much harder this year as a number of Jamaica's junior players are now playing at a much higher level than last year.

The tournament will be divided into three sections, an Open Section in which anyone can play, an Intermediate Section for entrants with a JCF rating below 1600, and an Amateur Section for players with a JCF rating under 1200.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three players in each section, the best under 10, 12 and 14 year-old players, best rural player, best female player, best junior and best new player.

The tournament was named in honour of Dr Harold Chan, who won the Jamaica National Chess Championship titles from 1972-74 and 1978-79, and was one of the first players in Jamaica to earn the National Master title, in 1975.
