Carolyn Cooper is afflicted with 'red yeye'
Published: Tuesday | September 15, 2009
I have never met Hyacinth Bennett nor do I belong to the political party of her choice. However, when I read Carolyn Cooper's vicious attack on her I felt compelled to respond, for it 'don't tek' a university graduate (which I am not) 'fe see say' Carolyn Cooper's ugly attack on Bennett and the Hydel Group of schools is indicative of Cooper herself being under an attack of a severe case of 'red yeye and bad mine'.
In her column (Sunday, September 13) Cooper ridicules Bennett for daring to state her intention of providing Jamaican children with university-level education. Cooper assaults Bennett for her entrepreneurship with nasty comments about clever administrators, who sell worthless pieces of paper, and snide remarks that Bennett should add a funeral home to her endeavours. These low, mean-spirited, ugly and misguided comments are without merit.
Tearing down success
In any case, Cooper is tearing down success that she has never even tried to build. If there isn't a need and desire for the university education that Bennett offers, will the school not close soon? Doesn't Jamaica need more entrepreneurs? So why does a vested interest university professor attack a successful entrepreneur in education for daring to offer a service?
According to Cooper, one 'real-real' university in Jamaica that the Government should support is the one that she has attached herself to. What Cooper doesn't say is that this university used to be a 'real-real' university a long time ago but it is no longer so because it has long lost relevance to the 'real-real' world and has become home to the likes of pseudo-intellectuals like Cooper herself and 'Ragashanti', who are given teaching positions there and who are into "mix up an blenda" of whatever comes to mind, including ugly attacks on people like Bennett and others who are actively engaged in nation building. Though red yeye might suit Cooper, it is bad for Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
