Ride on, sister, ride on

Sergeon

The Editor, Sir:

If her valedictorian speech was not enough, jockey Georgina Sergeon, in the article 'Maiden win for Sergeon' (The Sunday Gleaner, September 13, p. B2) continues giving account of herself in fine linguistic style.

Rarely, in Jamaica, do sports figures speak the language of the sport and also speak in an intelligent manner when asked about performance (notable exception in track and field - Kerron Stewart). In celebrating her first win on her third race day, she expressed herself to the newspaper in fine style when she was asked about the race. She said, "I knew the horse had a good chance although it was a long race, I felt I could slip them leaving the half-mile, as the horse was light enough with 46.5kg to hold the field at bay in the straight."

Such expressions were indeed a breath of fresh air, not just for racing but for (Jamaican) sports in general. I hope she will continue to speak and ride in that fine and intelligent style.

I am, etc.,
