Retake country from criminals

Published: Friday | September 11, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

For too long Jamaica has suffered from an embarrassing and devastating crime problem and much needs to be done to address this in the shortest possible time.

The latest murder that has shocked the country is that of honorary consul to the British High Commission, John Terry, who was found murdered outside his home in Mount Carey, St James, Wednesday afternoon.

British generosity

Surely, this is a low point for all Jamaicans, as one who has given of himself to public service has been brutally murdered. No Jamaican can be proud, especially when one considers the extent of the British benevolence to the island.

Recently, a group of Jamaican scholarship winners, including me, was treated to a lovely reception at the residence of High Commissioner Jeremy and his wife, Barbara Cresswell. This function serves as a direct reminder of the generosity of the British Government to our people as it seeks to foster greater partnership for a mutually beneficial future.

I am saddened at the unfortunate killing of the honorary consul and call on all well-thinking Jamaicans to not only denounce the crime but to begin to work assiduously to retake our country from these criminal elements.

Surely, this cannot be the future that we want for our children.

I am, etc.,
