Looking for luck on the triple nine

Published: Wednesday | September 9, 2009

It was outside a small, musty rum bar in Lionel Town, Clarendon, that Dexter Chung, a mechanic at a nearby sugar factory realised that September 9, 2009 was only a couple of days away. He had just listened to a lottery draw on the radio. He had placed a bet on the number 7. He didn't win.

"Bwoy, mi just start play, so mi nuh used to di rake and di dream dem, but mi learning," he said.

Now that he has found out that 9/9/9 is on its way, he's excited and is convinced this means something important.

"Mi ah go check mi bredrin Ronald. Him know what dem ting here mean. Him will tell me which number ah go play," he said excitedly.

He might be the only one excited about what the day might bring. The Web has been ignited with superstitious bloggers predicting doom on this day. One blogger, going by the moniker Firefly, proclaimed that computers worldwide would crash, causing helicopters and aeroplanes to fall from the sky. Others said that strange things would happen, like homes being invaded by frogs and locusts. A dreary bunch they are.

Less hysteria than 6/6/6

The 9/9/9 seems, however, to have been met with less hysteria than did 6/6/6 when many predicted that the devil would himself appear to the world or when the two sevens clashed (reference Culture's 1977 hit song).

So while Dexter Chung and perhaps other like-minded lottery players await good fortune on this day, the rest of the world has braced itself for the worst. Let us all see what happens.
