The Registrar General's Department (RGD) is indicating that persons being trained to do electronic registration will soon be in the field.

According to Dr Patricia Holness, chief executive officer of the RGD, the aim of the exercise is to reach more persons in remote areas and to have that information go straight to the department's records.

Compliance

The chief executive officer said that since the inception of bedside registration in January 2007, further compliance with the programme has risen from 30 per cent to about 65 per cent.

Bedside registration refers to the immediate registration of newborns.

She said this was encouraging, and the new system would reach more persons in a shorter period of time.
