WESTERN BUREAU:
The thrust into a new beginning at Cornwall College in Montego Bay, St James, for 11-year-old Demoy Kerr exceeded his expectations as he had the opportunity to interact with new friends and teachers on his first day of high school.
As to whether he is prepared for the workload that high school has to offer, the lad revealed: "I am prepared for what high school has to offer. I know it is a lot different from primary school, but I am ready and I am not afraid of the new challenge."
It is no surprise that one of his new-found loves at his new school is English literature, as he loves to read.
Yesterday, Demoy actively participated in English literature, integrated science, guidance and counselling, mathematics and visual arts classes.
Long syllabus
He explained that despite his extensive syllabus, he was looking forward to doing subjects, such as mathematics, integrated science, religious education, music, Spanish, English literature and visual arts.
"My new friends are really funny and fun to be around," Demoy told The Gleaner, pointing out that he did "not really" miss primary school.
"Plus, the range of things to do here is much greater, so I'm getting to like it here a lot - hard work and all."
Demoy has risen above the unfortunate death of his father, prior to sitting his Grade Six Achievement Test in March. Cornwall College was the school of his choice and, with his hard work, he secured a place at the high school.
His mother, Michelle Kerr, revealed that her son was very resilient and she was confident that he would make her proud.
"He has always done his best as it relates to schoolwork. He always says, 'I am going to make you proud, Mommy', and I can say to this day, he has made me proud," she said.
"He is very focused when it comes to his schoolwork, and I always encourage him to continue to do his best."
