  • Frazer's take football title

Frazer's Content blanked Ebony Vale 3-0 to lift the INSPORTS/West Central St Catherine football title at Frazer's Content last weekend.

The champions capped a perfect season as they maintain their 100 per cent win record throughout while collecting top prize money of $40,000, as well as other individual incentives.

Ebony Vale, who has been mercurial all season, defended stoutly as both teams ended the first half goalless. But the floodgates were kicked open on the resumption as they conceded three goals in 16 minutes.

Ricardo Whyte's 48th-minute strike sent Frazer's Content ahead, before the competition's MVP Jomoy Simming extended the lead six minutes later.

The championship was sealed on 64 minutes when Kemar Beckford scored Frazer's third goal as Ebony were resigned to accepting the runner-up spot.

Meantime, in the play-off for third, Point Hill beat Johnson Pen 2-1.

Point Hill went in front through Dane Valentine's strike on seven minutes, but Johnson Pen were back on level terms when Marvin Jarrett scored before the half ended.

After the break, the game seemed to be heading towards extra-time and possible penalty until Fitzroy Dewar struck late in the 70th minute.

  • Junction, Content Gardens secure semi-final wins

Content Gardens and Junction will meet in tomorrow's final of the SDC National Community cricket competition after contrasting semi-final victories last Sunday. The final is set for the Alpart Sports Ground in St Elizabeth, starting at 2 p.m.

Played in different conditions at Ultimate Cricket Ground, Discovery Bay, St Ann, host team Content Gardens ensured new champions would be crowned after beating defending champions South Star of Manchester by 39 runs via the Duckworth/Lewis method.

In the early game which started at 10 a.m., Junction of St Elizabeth, led by a captain's display of 65 not out and 2-23 from Troy Powell, defeated St Catherine's Dela Vega City for whom Junior McKenzie carried his bat with an attacking 74 from 40 as the Spanish Town community side were restricted to 144 for eight in 20 overs, losing by four runs in perfect conditions for cricket.

While the conditions were excellent for the first match, the feature was played under truncated circumstances as rain cut short South Star's innings by an over, leaving them at 157 for nine.

However, when play resumed with Content Gardens beginning their reply, the hosts got off to a flying start thanks to former national player Howard Harris, who blasted a whirlwind 96 (12x4, 6x6) off 30 balls in propelling the St Ann champions to 137 for four after 12 overs before play was called off due to bad light.

Earlier, South Star's Courtney Allen (37) and brother Sheldon (30) laid the foundation for a competitive total along with Terrence Dixon (24), who shared in a 70-run second-wicket partnership with the former champions.

Valentine McKenzie (2-33), Courtney Laing (2-33) and Patrick Harty (2-40) were the pick of the bowlers for Content Gardens.

  • Sanguinetti are netball Champs

Sanguinetti were crowned champions of the Michael Stern-sponsored North Western Clarendon netball competition at the Trout Hall Multi-Court in Trout Hall last Sunday.

Sanguinetti were awarded the title after their rivals, Green Vaders, were alleged to have physically abused one of the referees. This brought the game to a premature end during the third quarter with the scores level at 18-18.

A meeting was held during the week with the relevant stake holders and officials, and a report was sent to Michael Stern and a decision taken.

The competition was sponsored by the former member of parliament to the tune of $180,000 an increase of $30,000 from last year.

The winners took home $30,000 and a trophy while the losers, Green Vaders, walked away with $20,000.

Johns Hall took home $10,000 for finishing third.

The former member of parliament also took the opportunity to open the multi-court (netball and basketball) recently built and completed in mid-July 2009 for the community of Trout Hall. The project cost $2.8 million.
