'Poor can take no more'

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller has cautioned the Government against accepting a recommendation from the Jamaica Urban Transit Company to increase bus fares.
"The proposed increases will affect the elderly, persons with disabilities and children, all of whom are already suffering from steep price increases, wage freezes and job losses," she said in press statement issued Wednesday.
"The poor simply cannot take anymore."
Simpson Miller also said the timing of the request for the fare increase, just days before the start of the new school term, was ill-advised as a hike in fares would have a negative impact on school attendance.
