Member of Parliament for East Central St Andrew Dr Peter Phillips, is hoping that a new community league named in his honour, and launched last weekend at the Norman Manley High playingfield, will bring peace and harmony and foster high sporting achievements.
Speaking in an interview with The Gleaner recently, Dr Phillips said with so much negatives taking place in communities in the city, he is hopeful that the league can change behavioural attitudes.
"Firstly, it's an opportunity to showcase the talents that exist across the constituency; secondly, its an opportunity to bring solidarity between the young people given the tensions that exist in many communities in the city; and thirdly, it is an opportunity for the people to become familiar with each other and develop personal identity," said Phillips.
The league, which features football and netball competitions, is sponsored to the tune of approximately $200,000. At last Saturday's opening ceremony Dr Phillips met and greeted the participating teams, 16 in football and 10 in netball.
Added Dr Phillips, "We see the league as providing good, healthy competition and that can teach a lot of life skills as to how to compete and remain friends. I would like to see the competitions also raise the skill levels among players in the respective disciplines, and for East Central St Andrew to continue to be the home of top class athletes and teams. It's the start of what we hope will be a yearly venture." The competition continues tomorrow.

Following its recent retreat, the Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association (InterCol) has decided to register the organisation as a limited liability company.
