School leadership

GOOD LEADERSHIP qualities are essential to the development of any country, organisation, group or home. However, the leaders of many schools do not seem to share this view, as some principals are merely square pegs in round holes.
There are principals whose leadership qualities are only focused on creating an atmosphere of dissension, resulting in mayhem and unjust behaviour among teachers. I am not disputing the fact that there are principals who display good leadership qualities resulting in fairness in procedures, respect for teachers and excellent pedagogy skills.
Independent body necessary
However, the many problems in our schools could be avoided if principals were appointed by an independent body of persons, instead of politically appointed board chairmen and members.
I must warn the education minister to be careful of the additional powers he is contemplating to invest in principals because that might intensify the continued exodus of qualified and dedicated teachers from the classroom - thus the wish of attaining a world-class education system will remain only a daydream.
