Scotiabank in KO final

The Scotiabank Group advanced to the final of the KSAFA/Business House KO football competition on Thursday when they defeated 2008 beaten finalists, The Gleaner, 2-1 in semi-final action at Winchester Park, St George's College.

In a fast-paced game which saw Scotiabank controlling play in the first half with effective passing among key players Donovan Hibbert, Nicholas McCreath, Sheldon Palmer, Ajuran Brown and Norwayne Wright, they opened the scoring from one of these build-ups in the 19th minute.

Hibbert, who plays for August Town, unleashed a piledriver to the far corner from 25 yards out, the ball beating goalkeeper Everdeen Scarlett all ends up.

The Gleaner eventually gained the equaliser in the 50th minute when their leading scorer, Kemel Mullings, was brought down by goalkeeper Damion Crooks inside the 18-yard box and he made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Thereafter, The Gleaner tried desperately to gain the ascendancy with Mullings, Keiron Brock, Dwayne Thompson, Oneil 'Skillo' Morrison and substitute Braxton Fraser pressing hard. However, they ran out of steam in the closing stages, allowing Scotiabank to capitalise.

The winning goal came in the 89th minute when McCreath latched on to a ball inside the 18-yard box and beat Scarlett with a low, hard shot from an acute angle.

Scotiabank will meet either league champions Carib Cement or Nubian Construction in the final to be played next Wednesday at a venue to be announced.

Carib Cement unbeaten in Div 1

National Commercial Bank (NCB) clipped The Gleaner 1-0 at Ardenne High School with a late goal from Damion Sibbles, while unbeaten defending champions Carib Cement whipped Scotiabank 3-1 in their top-of-the-table clash at the NWC playing field.

A brace from Jermaine 'Fast Car' Rowe and one goal from Fabian Nethersole sealed the deal for Carib Cement, who led 2-0 at half-time. Donovan Hibbert got Scotia's consolation goal midway the second half.

Last Monday, Carib Cement clipped NWC 1-0 at Bull Pen, thanks to a first-half goal from Nethersole, while UWI and Courts played to a 1-1 draw at Mona. Devon Haughton sent UWI ahead in the 19th minute, but Jermaine Oakley gained the equaliser for Courts two minutes later.

On Thursday, NCB kept their hopes alive for a semi-final spot when they drew 1-1 with NWC at Mona. Garfield Robinson netted for NWC in the 40th minute, but George Clarke levelled the scores through a 50th minute goal.
