PNP demands Parliament resume

The People's National Party has called on speaker of the House of Representatives, Delroy Chuck, to immediately resume sittings of Parliament.

The House has been on its annual summer recess since last month and is not slated to resume sittings until September.

However, on Monday, the PNP's executive committee mandated the Parliamentary Opposition to call for the immediate resumption of the sittings.

"The Government must give a full account to Parliament of the critical elements of the imminent loan agreement being negotiated with the International Monetary Fund so that Jamaicans can understand its implications," Robert Pickersgill, the PNP chairman, said.

Nurses-health ministry dispute nears end

Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles has taken steps to iron out a dispute between the Ministry of Health and the Nurses' Association of Jamaica.

The two parties agreed to come together next Tuesday to settle matters unresolved at yesterday's emergency meeting, which was convened by Charles at his North Street, Kingston, offices.

The nurses had taken action over outstanding payments and fringe benefits as well as statements made by Chief Medical Officer Dr Sheila Campbell-Forrester in The Sunday Gleaner a week ago.
