Minister of Health Rudyard Spencer has appealed to persons who may fall within the high-risk group for complications from influenza A (H1N1), and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, to seek medical attention immediately.

This group includes persons with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, asthma and hypertension, children under five, and pregnant women.

"It is very important that you seek immediate medical attention once you begin to have flu-like symptoms and you fall within the high-risk group," Spencer said in a release on the weekend.

The health minister's appeal came after the island recorded a third death involving a person who was confirmed with influenza A (H1N1). The patient, the ministry noted, had underlying medical conditions.

According to the release, there were also six additional cases of the virus, bringing the total number to 62.

"Persons are being urged to take the recommended precautions, including washing hands frequently with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, and covering nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing," the release stated.
