Holiday face-off

The usual peace and tranquility in the cool hills of Dover, St Ann, will be disturbed today by the roaring engines of many high-powered motor cars, battling for supremacy at the island's premier circuit racing track.

After yesterday's Emancipation Day celebration, hundreds of diehard motorsport fans are expected at the event, as part of their festivities of the Independence holiday.

They will be entertained by a clash of the island's fastest cars and best drivers.

Ace driver Doug Gore believes his Mitsubishi Evolution V should be much faster than the previous meet and will be effective enough to deny his rival, David Summerbell Jr, the chequered flag.

Reports reaching Automotives are that Chris Campbell and Guy Fraser are top contenders.

"I won't respond to that because racing is very funny. This minute you are up and the next minute you are down. It is a very fast car, but the wish for myself and everybody is that we have an accident-free day," said Fraser, who is a member of Team MoBay.

"My car should be much faster this meet. The last time I did an interesting time, which they claimed was the fourth fastest lap time at the track," said Campbell, who resides in Frankfield, Clarendon, and began racing last year.

Dream

"I have always wanted to get involved in motor racing. Back in the day I used to come to Dover and sit behind the fence, watching Doug Gore racing. It was my biggest dream to race on the track," said Campbell.

With the support of close friends, he got a Mitsubishi Evolution Four, which they modified and took to the track.

"It used to be my street car," said a giggling Campbell, who is one of the drivers who will be representing Jamaica at the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship.
