The new Ten Commandments

You run things. Things don't run you!

That's the second of the 10 commandments, according to Dr Leahcim Semaj, who delivered the keynote address to high-school students registered to participate in the first-ever summer camp to be hosted by Dream Jamaica at the University of the West Indies, Mona, on Monday, July 13.

More than 50 students, many of them accompanied by their parents and guardians, registered at Dream Jamaica's opening breakfast to participate in the programme, scheduled to run for six weeks.

"Folks, I do believe that whatever you put into this activity today is exactly what you are going to get out of it," said Semaj, a psychologist.

The presentation he delivered mimics the biblical Ten Command-ments, with his own spin:

1. Your history does not define your destiny.

2. You run things. No one can prevent you from learning if you want to learn.

3. You are educated. You have developed yourself to do the things that you have to do when they ought to be done, whether you like it or not.

4. Education has one purpose: to make you trainable. Training then makes you employable.

5. You need to continuously learn brand-new skills every five years because you'll be changing careers every three years.

6. Exposure facilitates awareness; awareness facilitates interest; and interest facilitates skill.

7. Your parents cannot leave their status to you on their will. Sorry!

8. Understand the motives of those who want to be your friends. What are they setting you up for?

9. Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to God.

10. The final commandment reads: Some people succeed because they are destined to; but most people succeed because they are determined to.
