ROCK, TRELAWNY:

President of the University of Technology (UTech), Professor Errol Morrison, revealed some startling information on access to tertiary education as he strengthened his case for his institution to take over the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium.

In batting for education, he said 73 per cent of Americans have access to tertiary education, while the statistics stand at 38 per cent in Barbados and 25 per cent in St Lucia. Only 16.4 per cent of students going through the education system in Jamaica have access to tertiary education.

According to Morrison, the low figure has led to an inadequate workforce.

The UTech boss was speaking during the installation of the Rotary Club of Falmouth's new executive at the Glistening Waters Restaurant & Marina.

Morrison used the opportunity to point to the need for UTech's expansion, and said, should his organisation be given the stadium, lights would be installed by next year. Approximately US$1 million will be needed for the project and, according to the professor, this has already been sourced.

He also said a six-lane running track would be put in by next year.
