'No way!' - Transport minister says the Government will not stand by while JUTC buses are vandalised

Transport Minister Mike Henry is raising concern about a new wave of attacks against buses owned by the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC).

Three of the company's new yellow buses have been damaged by vandals. The value of the damage is $1 million.

Earlier this year, attacks on the JUTC's buses left the state company with $7 million in damage.

The recent attacks on the buses include one act of arson in which surveillance showed a young man attempting to burn the bus by igniting a piece of cardboard in a plastic bag at the back of the unit.

He then left the bus.

The damage was estimated at $400,000.

Two buses were also stoned on Monday night in east Kingston, resulting in damage to windshields, which cost close to $300,000 to replace.

Henry has described the vandalism as a disregard for law and order and called on the judiciary to make an example of those caught.

"We have been through this before and we will go through it again, if necessary, as we will not allow a few sick minds for whatever misguided reasons to derail the progress of the public-bus service. No way!" Henry declared.

This series of video stills shows a man setting fire to a JUTC bus. The footage was captured, using the bus's camera equipment

The man finds a comfortable seat in the back of the bus to commit the act.

The man (left) takes out his candle in his right hand to start the fire from the back of the bus.

Schoolboy sees smoke and alerts the driver.
