Jamaicans were not to be outdone in paying tribute to the king of pop, Michael Jackson, on the day when thousands of persons gathered at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for his memorial service.

Dedicated fans signed a condolence book, set up at the Institute of Jamaica, signalling their final farewell to Jackson.

Around one in the afternoon, only 16 persons had signed. A visit by The Gleaner about noon revealed the slow pace at which persons came in to pay their final respects.

More fans

However, nearing the close of activities in the afternoon the flow of individuals increased, pushing the total number to 66.

The recorded sentiments showed how loved Jackson was in the hearts of those Jamaicans.

Comments like, 'You will always be remembered', 'Sadly missed' and others highlighting his legacies echoed the sentiments of most fans.

Hilary Murray, a fan of Jackson, said she signed the book because she loves Jackson's music and believes he is a legend.

At the Staples Center, there were songs and tears but little dancing. Instead, Michael Jackson's memorial was a sombre, spiritual cere-mony that reached back for the essence of the man.

Singer, dancer, superstar, humanitarian: That was how the 20,000 people gathered inside the Staples Center arena on Tuesday, and untold millions watching around the world, remembered Jackson, whose immense talent was almost drowned by the spectacle of his life and fame.

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia Grange, who during her busy schedule got to see parts of the televised service, reported that she was touched by Jermaine Jackson's singing and Michael's daughter, Paris', tribute.

Death certificate

Yesterday, officials also released Michael Jackson's death certificate, but it did not state the cause of death.

The cause of death is listed as "deferred". Police and coroner's officials continue to probe what killed the 50-year-old singer on June 25.

The pop legend, who was the seventh child of the Jackson family, was born Michael Joseph Jackson on August 29, 1958. He joined the Jackson Five at the age of 10 and in 1971 began a career as a solo artiste recording hits in the 1980s such as Thriller, Billie Jean and Beat It. He died leaving three children.
