Jamaica's 2007 World decathlon silver medallist champion, Maurice Smith, beat a strong field in the combined event on Thursday to emerge the Gleaner Sports Performer of the Week.

Competing in the Czech Republic, Smith defeated reigning world champion and world-record holder Roman Sebrle and Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan, the world bronze medallist in 2007. In difficult conditions (rain and wind) Smith took the lead after the hurdles and increased his margin over Sebrle with a 51.45m throw in the discus.

Smith topped the event with 8,157 points ( 10.88 (100m), 7.25 (long jump), 14.67m (shot put), 1.97m (high jump), 48.35 (400m), 14.09 (110mh), 51.45m (discus), 4.70m (pole vault), 53.14m (javelin), 4:46.43 (1500m). Sebrle was second with 8,058 points while Karpov was third on 8,029.
