Water bills making me sick

Published: Saturday | June 27, 2009

The Editor, Sir,

I am a physically disabled woman who is having a serious problem with the National Water Commission (NWC) and I would like the prime minister to intervene on my behalf.

Despite my disability, I do everything in my power to pay my electricity and water bills, even when I know it is impossible for me to be using up what they claim I have; but I struggle and pay, sometimes going hungry, just to make sure my bills are paid, especially the electricity, as I need the refrigerator to keep my medications in good condition.

Now, ever since the start of this year, my water bill has been coming to $3,000-$4,000. This is still too big for me, but as usual, I fight my way through and pay it. Now, the bill I got for June is $7,800. Nothing different has been done to my house, and as a matter of fact, two persons from the home have been overseas since March. I called the NWC and they say my May bill was an estimate, and a whole lot of other nonsense.

What I want to know is what caused any of my bills to be estimated, when every month I sit on my veranda and see the man come in to read the meter.

Mr Prime Minister, you need to tell the NWC to stop it, as it is sending up my blood pressure.

I need help on this from some minister of government. I am not asking for a handout. I just want my water bill to be normal, even the same $3,000-$4,000 but certainly not $8,000 for one month.

I am, etc.,
