Don't use a broadbrush

The Editor, Sir:

The actions of clergymen exploiting their sexuality in socially unacceptable behaviour, as well as other 'illegal' sexual activities, must not be condoned. However, it would be a fallacy to suggest that the behaviour of one individual might be generalised to that individual's profession. It is wise to view people's actions as indicative of their own attitude and as such, apply 'individual meritocracy'.

Therefore, clergymen must be spared the stereotypical labelling and be seen as good and decent persons who are willing to maintain the integrity of their profession. In effect, pastors who solicit sex and/or sleep with minors should be seen as individuals with their own mindset and not necessarily microcosms of clergymen.

The media should place emphasis on the individual and not the individual's profession.
