RECENT REVELATIONS in Parliament that the Government was being asked to write off a US$4.2 million (J$374 million) debt accrued by Jamaica Cricket 2007 Limited have taken another twist, with a Government parliamentarian calling for a commission of enquiry into Jamaica's participation in the event two years ago.

Moving a motion in the Upper House yesterday, Senator Desmond McKenzie asked his colleagues in the Senate to approve the resolution, requesting a commission of enquiry into the matter.

The Government senator wants to determine whether the co-hosting of the world event by Jamaica resulted in any benefit to the island.

Last week, Parliament's Public Accounts Committee summoned Chairman of Jamaica Cricket 2007 Limited Dr Wayne Reid to respond to concerns about the massive financial loss racked up by the company following the tournament.

Dr Reid dismissed any assertions that the company had mismanaged the staging of the event, giving details about the various costs to co-host the Cricket World Cup.

Dr Reid gave the assurance that all contracts had been scrutinised by the attorney general's department, and the bid to host warm-up matches and the opening ceremony had been approved by the administration at the time.
