Restart inner-city housing project

Published: Wednesday | June 24, 2009

THE EDITOR, Sir.,

THE PROBLEM of squatting and the lack of social housing has been a topical issue over the last few weeks. What we seem to forget is the one government solution which, up until a couple years ago, was steadily making a big difference in this area: the Inner-city Housing Project.

This well-managed project, financed and executed by the National Housing Trust, provided two- and three-bedroom apart-ments to low-income families in deprived areas of Kingston. Before the scheme could be rolled out to other urban areas across Jamaica, Prime Minister Golding decided to stop the project dead in its tracks. This has left hundreds of people, who were expecting a scheme to come to their area, very disappointed.

If the powers that be are really serious about alleviating the various housing and social problems in our towns and cities, restarting the inner-city project, and rolling it out to all parishes, should now be looked at as a matter of urgency.

I am, etc.,
