CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC)
Hundreds of public-sector workers took to the streets here yesterday in a peaceful protest march aimed at forcing the government's hand on the matter of a promised 7.5 per cent wage increase, amounting to EC$20.5 million (US$7.6 million).
Close to 1,000 placard-bearing demonstrators marched through the streets of the capital, chanting slogans as they made their way across a section of the city circuit in the blazing afternoon sun.
The protesters, including teachers, are unhappy with a unilateral decision taken by the Stephenson King administration to amend its pay offer to 3.5 per cent.
