Here's a sample of what's happening in Go-Jamaica's discussion chamber. Join the debate at www.gleanerblogs.com
On self-employment
Ommugabe says:
The 'micro' business loans being made available by the Government to high-school graduates is finally an excellent govemental effort to help eliminate poverty.
Every final-year high-school college and university graduate should have intensive training in entrepreneurship as part of the curriculum.
Miseducating Jamaicans for the slave labour force is an ignorant and evil effort to continue. If every high school, college and university graduate is primed to 'start a ting', start a business, then the price of Jamaican labour would have to go up; because more Jamaicans will either have their own business, or would have to be better compensated as partners in a business.
On $5,000 note
Kevin Forge says:
According to the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), we should have had a $5,000 note years ago. They didn't say it, but I would guess sometime around when the Jamaican dollar hit 50-1.
The only reason it took this long is that our politicians are too afraid of starting debates like this one.
Let me break it down to basic practicality. Last year, I sold a 12- year-old economy Sedan (Toyota Corolla). The cash payment I received for this vehicle could not fit in my pockets and I'm a big guy who wears loose fitting clothes.
Walking around with a shopping bag of cash is something for courier services or supermarket owners. Not somebody selling a very old, low-end car.
New note signals problems
Zach says:
I cannot speak on the economic aspects of this matter as I was not trained in that area, but I must admit that I have some brain cells that causes me to think rationally.
If there were not a problem, there would not be a $5,000 bill. Simply put.
Remember Finance Minister Audley Shaw said this economic crisis would not affect Jamaica. Not true. Think about it, to what benefit it is to them to introduce a new note and they know it would have stirred fear. How brilliant!
This government needs to start talking to the public in real terms. Come to us clean; give us all the facts. I think it is full time the politics in Jamaica is radicalised, let them know whether they don't perform they are out!
