Flood warning extended

The National Meteorological Service has extended its flash-flood warning until 5 this afternoon for low-lying and flood-prone com-munities across the island as it expects heavy rainfall to continue.

A flash-flood warning means flooding has occurred or will occur shortly.

The heavy rainfall is being influenced by a trough east of the island. Throughout yesterday, most parishes experienced light to heavy showers. Heavy thunderstorms were also experienced in northern and western parishes.

The inclement weather conditions could persist into Thursday, local meteorologists say, as the trough drifts westward of the island and interacts with an area of low pressure over Hispaniola.

The Met Service is advising motorists and pedestrians not to attempt to cross flooded roadways or any other areas as strong currents are likely.

Fishers and other marine interests are also being advised to be careful as gusty winds and rough seas may be experienced in areas of showers and thunderstorms north and south of the island.
