JUSTICE ON TRIAL - Editors for Justice report card

The Gleaner's guest editors have completed their assignment to produce yesterday's edition of the newspaper. After their work, they speak about their experience:

Lisa Lakhan-Chen

"It was an enlightening experience. Not only was it fun, but I also appreciate the opportunity to impact everyone who reads The Gleaner, to actually get our thoughts, ideas and words on paper. Working with such a dynamic team on one newspaper has been great, but it's a mere drop in the bucket to make Jamaica better. We have only scratched the surface in an attempt to provide an overview of some issues that we feel would bring about change in Jamaica. We have to ask ourselves: how do we continue this process? How do we get journalists to keep pressing these issues?"

Dr Carolyn Gomes

"I never realised how hard it was to investigate and write stories and then fit them into available space in a newspaper. I have a newly increased respect for the job of newspaper editors. I am also very impressed that we all don't hate each other after today. I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the journalists and editors and hope that the stories we have done together will help to open society's eyes to the changes that need to be made."

Susan Goffe

"I found the process of working on this project fascinating. From the discussions about ideas for stories, through the process of editing drafts, to the sign-off on pages, it has been an eye-opening experience. I enjoyed working with the reporters and the editorial team. I can't imagine working to those deadlines every day and I have great respect for the work they do. Working on one issue of the paper reinforced for me the important part a newspaper can play in the life of a country."

Davina Gayle

"If this much work goes into editing a Monday paper, I don't want to think about what happens with a Sunday paper. I don't envy the people who do this every day but I take my hat off to them."

St Rachel Ustanny

"I am very happy to have had the opportunity to work as a member of The Gleaner's editorial team. The experience was quite enlightening, as I was able to see, first-hand, the magnitude of work that is required to produce the newspaper on a daily basis. Previously, I underestimated the significant amount of hours and effort that is required by journalists and editors in preparing articles and the paper for print. I now have a new sense of appreciation for their work, in producing Jamaica's leading newspaper. I look forward to working with you again, thanks."

Robin Lumsden

"I totally enjoyed the day; the 10 hours flew by. It was a mentally tiring exercise, but joyous and hilarious at times. It was fun working with our JFJ (Jamaicans for Justice) team and getting to know the reporters and editors; I have a healthy respect for them and for The Gleaner. They rolled out the red carpet for us - and they put a lot of trust in us. I was honoured to be a part of this experience. The arc of justice is so broad, I felt we were only scratching the surface."
