Road signs for Passagefort

Published: Saturday | April 25, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

The Passagefort Housing Scheme is very much in need of road signs and road markings. The street signs have been destroyed by accidents, been cut down or have fallen down due to being eroded by elements.

Using the traditional galvanised materials may prove financially challenging in these times. I suggest that an alliance be forged between house owners in the community and the municipal authorities. The alliance should be between owners of corner lots and the municipality to allow the names of the corridor to be painted on the walls of the households. Certain conditions governing the maintenance of the name on the walls would have to be decided on in advance. At the junction, the names of the minor and major corridor should be painted on the wall. One of the conditions should be that the municipality repaint the names periodically - say every three years, and the householders would undertake not to over-paint the name when they are repainting the fence.

The painting of the name should be done using light reflecting material. This would allow the name to be visible at nights. Using this method of placing road signs would eliminate the need for pipes and aluminium sheets. The name of the corridor could also be pointed on the curb wall of the road; identifying the roads in Passage Fort Housing Scheme is really challenging both for people who are new to the area and for many who are living here for a long time.
