A catastrophe in waiting

The Editor, Sir:

The bridge commonly referred to as 'The Jacks River Bridge' (located at the intersection between Hamilton Mountain and Jacks River, in St Mary) is in such a deplorable state that those who traverse this area on a daily basis, and those who live in the surrounding areas are fearful for their lives.

The makeshift road that was made to divert traffic from the bridge is in an equally terrible condition. It was never paved and has more deep potholes than can be counted. Trucks and other large vehicles that are supposed to use this 'road' almost never do. Whenever it rains for a prolonged period, the makeshift road is flooded and rendered impassable and the bridge which has a belly like a woman with a nine month's pregnancy will only be crossed by the brave at heart.

Miracle

This bridge was made shortly after World War 1 when vehicular traffic was almost non-existent. Repairs to this bridge over the years have always been minimal, it is a miracle that it is still standing.

This is a very important bridge as it links the communities of Geddes Mountain, Hamilton Mountain, Jacks River, Fontabelle, Free Hill, Oxford, Corn Hill, Geddes Town and many other communities to Ocho Rios. This is also the preferred alternative route which links Ocho Rios and Port Maria's environs.

Thousands of people use this bridge on a daily basis for work, school and other purposes. It will be very unfortunate if this bridge were to collapse when vehicles are passing over it.

Death, mayhem and excessive spending can be avoided.

If this long-neglected bridge is not repaired urgently, a catastrophe of monumental proportions will take place.

I am, etc.,
