Looking and feeling pretty does not necessarily mean applying layers of make-up. It is often said less is more and, depending on the occasion and the time of day, this is very true for make-up.

In the first in the series What's your look? we explore the concept of a natural, flawless look using foundation, eyeshadow, blush and lipstick/gloss.

Ideal for morning and daytime, this look only requires light make-up application, utilising earthy and neutral colours for eyes and lips. Professional make-up artiste Paul March says a natural look is really about enhancing facial features. This, he notes, does not require heavy application as the make-up effects should be subtle.

To achieve this look, March took us through the steps using April Jackson, Miss Jamaica Universe 2007, as his subject.

Below are the steps to achieve a natural and fresh look.

Face

1. Cleanse your face then moisturise.

2. Apply a foundation which matches your complexion, finished with translucent powder to set the foundation.

Eyes

3. Use earth tones such as shades of brown and gold.

4. Highlight brow bone to upper lash line with gold.

5. From crease to lash line/eyelid add brown shadow then blend colours.

6. Line eyes - top and bottom - with a brown or light-brown liner then smudge. Lines should be as close to the lash line as possible and should not be too thick.

7. Apply mascara to lashes. Fill brows with dark-brown brow powder.

Cheeks

8. Smile while applying blush to cheeks. Soften jaw lines with blush.

Lips

9. Line lips with a neutral colour to define them.

10. Use something clear on lips or, for a little colour, apply a little pink or gold lipgloss.

After following these steps, all you need is the right attitude. And remember, make-up does not mean being all made up.
