They have been knocking at the door for quite some time and finally they delivered the goods.

Go-kart racers Fraser McConnell, 10, and Sheldon Morgan, 31, were the two happiest contestants leaving the track at the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) championship held at the Palisadoes International Raceway, St Andrew, last Sunday, as both were first-time winners.

In his preparation for the meet, the young McConnell explained how he had been training at least twice per week to improved his lap times. His efforts paid off as he won the 80cc class.

"This was only his fifth race meet and I was not expecting the chequered flag. Believe me, I was ecstatic; the hard work that he and his coach Peter Rae had been doing seems to be paying off," commented Peter McConnell, Fraser's dad.

In other events, defending champion Jonathan Law continued to display his supremacy in the 80cc class.

The eight-year-old won two of three races and crossed the line second behind young McConnell in the third and final event of the class.

A report on the JKA website had glowing tributes for both Law and McConnel.

"It is remarkable to see these youngsters behave so maturely on the track. Both performances stood out. The future looks bright for the racing world in Jamaica," the report read.

Other racers who stood out on the day were Colin Daley, Jr, Peter Moodie, Jr, William and Phillip Myers, Martin Anderson, Joel Jackson, and Chad Leahoung, who registered an impressive win in the Rotax Junior Class.

The next meet is scheduled for April 5.
