The Editor, Sir:

Jamaica is crying out for role models for our young ones. All they have now are the examples being set by our various singers, some good and some bad.

We really should set examples, starting first in the home, which means good parenting.

No parental example

However, most of our parents are teenagers and come from homes where no example is set and so we depend on our teachers, etc, to teach morality.

And where are our teachers coming from? Homes without parental examples?

Unfortunately, because of the state of our economy, a lot of our families live in one bedroom and the children see all the sexual activity of their parents from a very young age and naturally, they think it is the norm. Hence the case of the two very young children that were attempting to do the sex act, as reported recently in the press.

Social services

It is imperative that our social services go into the homes of the less privileged to see how they live and to try and do something to separate the children from the parents' rooms so that they would not see these acts.

It is also imperative that young children be told about sex and that it not be carried out by the young ones, but it be seen as something that two people do when they love each other. It is essential for children to wait until they are old enough to understand what true love is.

The entire nation must take charge of our children because they are this country's future and we need to set guidelines for them.

It is also imperative that there be monitors on the buses that take our children to and from school to eliminate the misbehaviour of drivers and conductors.

Job to lead

It will be a very hard task, but it must be done in order to show our children the right path.

Each day, we continue to fail our children and the society is paying for this failure, seen by the number of our young ones who are opting for crime because they truly do not know right from wrong.

The Church has an immense job on its hands, but it is its job to lead this nation on the right path.
