Jet Ski D'Or romps Grooms' feature
published: Sunday | November 2, 2008

Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

Randall Soth, new general manager and acting CEO of Caymanas Track Limited.

JET SKI D'OR made an impressive move leaving the quarter pole and proceeded to romp the straight five feature race for the Grooms' Association Trophy (claiming $325,000 - $295,000) at Caymanas Park yesterday.

Installed a 2-1 second favourite with customary pilot Milton Powell riding for trainer Desmond Shand, JET SKI D'OR, who is a specialist over the course, raced in touch as MOUNT DIABLO (24-1) made most on the far side ahead of highly fancied BACK POCKET (5-2), with 8-5 favourite NATIONAL GALLERY failing to go the early pace under Pana-manian jockey Dick Cardenas.

But JET SKI D'OR was merely biding his time, as the five-year-old gelding surged past MOUNT DIABLO approaching the distance.

Running powerfully on the far side, he moved away to beat MOUNT DIABLO and the 61-1 outsider DOLLS DELIGHT by 7 3/4 lengths in the fairly good time of 0:58.3.

Confident

Calverton Brown, owner of JET SKI D'OR, said he was pretty confident that the five-year-old gelding would have been hard to beat.

"He beat a good field over the course on August 23 in a time of 0.58.2 when running for $450,000 and last time out, finished a clear second to out-of-class DOUBLE BOW in another fast-run race over the straight. So I knew they would have to run better than 59.0 seconds to beat him today.

"I had every faith in my jockey, even though he does not get many rides.

"But he knows the horse very well and is very hard-working and honest. No other jockey was considered and Powell gave him a peach of a ride", said Brown.

Not surprisingly, JET SKI D'OR was claimed for $325,000 after the race.

Brown was presented with the Grooms' Association Trophy by president Paul Pancho, accompanied by the association's vice-president Errol Thomas and treasurer Carlton White.

Included in the presentation party was the newly-appointed general manager and acting CEO of Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), Randall 'Randy' Soth.

His appointment took effect from October 27, following the resig-nation of former CEO Walford Brown and the untimely death of acting CEO Donald Tankoy in recent weeks.

Experienced

Since 1978, Soth, who holds a BSc in chemistry from Dickinson College, has been employed in every aspect of racecourse management and administration at a number of tracks in the United States, including Gulfstream Park, Calder, Arlington Park, Monmouth Park, Penn National Park, Atlantic City racetrack and, more recently, as president of Fair Ground racetrack in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Soth, accompanied by racing secretary Denzil Miller Jr, was introduced to racing personnel throughout Caymanas Park yesterday.
