From diehard fan to ace race driver
published: Sunday | November 2, 2008

Jaggon ... "Racing was always something I've wanted to do." - Contributed

IMMEDIATELY AFTER he wrapped up the championship in the MP 2 Class and returned to the pit, Peter Jaggon was doused with water and whatever alcoholic beverages his jubilant crew members could lay hands on.

His two children hugged him, while his wife, Dr Jacqueline Jaggon, stood aside and wept in jubilation. It was an emotional moment for the Jaggon family at the Heroes Day race meet at the Dover Raceway, St Ann, on October 20, and a fitting end to the 2008 race meet season.

"I felt really good, because it was one of two things that I wanted to achieve. The first was to race at Dover and to come here and win one of the class championships. It is unbelievable," said Jaggon, who has been transformed from a diehard motorsport fan to a race driver.

Jaggan has been watching circuit racing since the inception of Dover some two decades ago. But all this changed about a year ago when his cousin, Lisa Bowman-Lee, and her husband, Paul, influenced him to get involved as a competitor. With the help of his current mechanic, Wayne Wallace, they found a car and rebuilt the engine.

He made his debut as a rookie in June last year, and since then has improved significantly. While he felt happy competing in the same events with veterans such as David Summerbell, Peter 'Bull' Thompson, Doug Gore, Peter Rae and company, his eyes are set the bigger class.

Having won the IP 33 and MP 2 classes, Jaggon wanted to compete in the IP 27 Class. Jaggon, the proprietor of Jaggon's Gases, said he could not have done it without the help of his support crew, who ensured that his IGL/Mivida-sponsored Honda CRV was always ready for the track.

Motorsport is dangerous, and according to his wife Jacqueline: "Everytime he took the track, my knees gets week while watching the race. I am nervous and just keep biting my nails. But it is a joy to see him completing the final lap and taking the chequered flag."
