'Gully creepers' dominate Beijing
On the weekend that the Jamaican spirit was bolted to the stratosphere, we murdered almost 20 persons. In the week that Bolt created Olympic history by winning both the 100m and 200m events in world-record time, the Planning Institute of Jamaica reported that economic performance slumped for the last quarter. That's the paradox called Jamaica. (Boyne)
Jamaican-born and coached
It was the kind of scene that takes place every day in Jamaica. A bunch of guys race across a field, one pulls away from the pack, holds out his hands in triumph, and slaps his chest in glee shouting 'A me dat!'. Then he celebrates by dropping a few dance moves to the reggae music that's always pounding in the background somewhere. (Chang)
Shock and awe in Beijing!
The past several days have been the most historic in sports in our recent, if not living, memory. After an opening spectacle to outdo all other opening ceremonies, and perhaps those for years to come, Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympic Games, was to become the venue of the unbelievable.(Seaga)
Sports and nation building
So many things came together for Jamaica over the weekend of August 16 and 17 and the days after on the country's long road of nation building. Almost 100 years ago in 1910, the High School Athletics Championships (Boys' Champs) began. Girls' Champs followed in 1957. Together, they have become one of the most successful high school athletics meets in the world. (Buddan)
